Manchester United on the verge of signing Ederson from Atalanta
Manchester United are close to finalising a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, according to sources. The Brazilian has been a key figure in Gian Piero Gasperini's side, and Ruben Amorim sees him as the solution to United's midfield frailties.
Why Ederson fits Amorim's system
Amorim favours a 3-4-3 formation with two energetic central midfielders. Ederson, 25, averages 2.8 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game in Serie A this season, ranking in the top 10% among European midfielders for ball recoveries. His passing accuracy of 87% also suits United's need for progressive distribution from deep.
United have struggled defensively in midfield since Casemiro's decline. The Brazilian has lost possession 12 times per 90 minutes in 2025-26, compared to Ederson's 6.5. The Atalanta star also covers 11.2 km per match, offering the engine required for Amorim's pressing system.
Transfer fee and market context
The deal is expected to be worth around £45 million, including add-ons. Atalanta initially demanded £55 million, but Ederson's desire to move and United's structured offer have narrowed the gap. This fee would place him among the top 15 most expensive Premier League midfield signings, comparable to the £47 million Manchester City paid for Rodri in 2019.
Impact on Manchester United's season
United currently sit 7th in the Premier League, six points off the top four. Adding Ederson would provide the defensive screen needed to protect a backline that has conceded 38 goals in 27 league matches – the worst record among top-half sides. He would likely partner Kobbie Mainoo, allowing Bruno Fernandes to push higher.
- Ederson's arrival could push Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay further down the pecking order, potentially prompting their departures.
- United have kept only four clean sheets in the league this season; Ederson's presence could improve that record significantly.
- For FPL managers, Ederson is priced at £5.5m and has 0% ownership currently. With United's favourable run of fixtures (including Leicester and Wolves), he could be a budget enabler.
What happens next?
Personal terms are expected to be agreed this week, with a medical likely to take place before the end of March. Ederson would join on a five-year contract with the option of a sixth. United hope to announce the deal before their April 5th clash with Chelsea, giving Amorim time to integrate his new midfielder.
