Newcastle Accept €80m Barcelona Bid for Anthony Gordon

Newcastle United have agreed to sell Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for €80m (£68.5m), according to sources. The England international is now set to travel to Catalonia for a medical, ending his two-year spell on Tyneside.

Context: Gordon's Rise and Newcastle's Dilemma

Gordon arrived from Everton for £45m in January 2023 and quickly became a fan favourite. His pace, direct running and defensive work rate made him a key part of Eddie Howe's system. Last season he scored 11 goals and provided 10 assists in the Premier League, earning a spot in Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad.

However, Newcastle's need to comply with Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) forced their hand. The club faced a June 30 deadline to raise funds, and Gordon's sale provides a clean profit of around £35m on the books.

Impact: Tactical Shift and FPL Fallout

Tactical Context

Gordon operated primarily on the left wing, cutting inside onto his right foot. His departure leaves a void that Harvey Barnes or Miguel Almirón could fill. Barnes offers more direct crossing, while Almirón provides defensive stability. Howe may also switch to a 4-3-3 with an inverted right winger, reducing reliance on wide speedsters.

Fantasy Premier League Impact

Gordon was owned by 18% of FPL managers and priced at £7.0m. With Newcastle's fixtures including Wolves and Southampton in the next three gameweeks, his departure forces a mass transfer. Barnes (£6.5m) sees a ownership spike, while Alexander Isak remains the prime Newcastle attacker.

What's Next: Newcastle's Summer Rebuild

Newcastle now have around €80m to reinvest. Targets include a right-sided centre-back — with Crystal Palace's Marc Guéhi valued at £65m — and a box-to-box midfielder like Ederson of Atalanta. The club must complete these deals before the window closes on August 31 or risk losing further key players.

  • €80m fee equals the current Premier League record for a winger (Jadon Sancho to Manchester United, €85m).
  • Barcelona will pay in three instalments: €30m upfront, €25m in January 2025, €25m next summer.
  • Newcastle's net spend this summer now stands at -€55m, giving them headroom under PSR.
