Ken Bates dies at 94: Former Chelsea and Leeds United owner passes away
Former Chelsea and Leeds United owner Ken Bates has died aged 94, Chelsea announced on Saturday. The club confirmed the news in a statement, paying tribute to the man who owned the Blues from 1982 to 2003.
Bates’ impact at Chelsea
Bates bought Chelsea in 1982 for just £1, rescuing the club from financial ruin. Under his ownership, Chelsea gained promotion to the top flight and established themselves as a Premier League mainstay. He oversaw the development of the Stamford Bridge stadium and the youth academy.
During his 21-year tenure, Chelsea won the FA Cup in 1997 and 2000, the League Cup in 1998, and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1998. He sold the club to Roman Abramovich in 2003, a move that transformed Chelsea into a global powerhouse.
Leeds United ownership
After leaving Chelsea, Bates acquired Leeds United in 2005. His time at Elland Road was marked by financial struggles and a points deduction in 2007 following administration. Leeds gained promotion back to the Championship under his ownership in 2010, but Bates sold the club in 2012.
His legacy at Leeds remains mixed, with some fans crediting him for saving the club from liquidation, while others criticised his handling of finances.
Reaction and tributes
Chelsea’s statement called Bates a "true pioneer" and "a driving force" behind the club’s modern success. Former players, including John Terry and Frank Lampard, have paid tribute on social media. Terry called Bates "a visionary leader" and Lampard described him as "a man who gave me my start."
Leeds United also released a statement extending condolences to Bates’ family. The club acknowledged his role in steering the club through a difficult period.
What comes next
Bates’ family has requested privacy. A memorial service is expected to be held at Stamford Bridge. His death marks the end of an era for English football, with many remembering his colourful personality and decisive leadership.
