Heskey Backs Wolves and West Ham for Championship Dominance

Former England striker Emile Heskey has predicted that Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United will set the pace in the Championship this season. Speaking to Boyle Sports, Heskey also tipped Birmingham City to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

Context and History

Both Wolves and West Ham were relegated from the Premier League last season, making them strong contenders for promotion. Wolves, under new management, have retained key players such as Joao Gomes and Matheus Cunha, while West Ham have bolstered their squad with experienced additions like Maxwel Cornet and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Birmingham City, also relegated, finished 22nd in the Championship last term but have since appointed a new manager and made several signings, including Jay Stansfield and Alfie May, to strengthen their attacking options.

Heskey's Analysis

Heskey, who spent six years at Leicester City and also played for Birmingham, Liverpool and Aston Villa, emphasised the importance of squad depth in the gruelling Championship campaign. "Wolves and West Ham have the quality to go straight back up," he said. "Their squads are still Premier League standard in many areas."

Regarding Birmingham, Heskey noted: "They’ve got the infrastructure and fanbase to bounce back. It won't be easy, but I fancy them to be in the top six come May."

Impact on the Title Race and Promotion Battle

  • Wolves and West Ham are immediate favourites for automatic promotion, with odds of 6/4 and 2/1 respectively according to bookmakers.
  • Birmingham City are priced at 7/1 for promotion, with their early season form under new management a key factor.
  • Other contenders include Leeds United, Southampton and Leicester City, but Heskey believes the relegated sides have an edge due to retained quality.

What’s Next

The Championship season is now past the halfway point, and the race for automatic promotion is intensifying. Wolves currently sit second, just two points behind leaders West Ham, while Birmingham are fifth and within touching distance of the play-off places. Every point matters as the sprint to the finish begins.
