West Ham Hit Woodwork Four Times in 3-0 Loss to Brentford; Tottenham Biggest Winners
West Ham's survival hopes suffer as they hit woodwork four times in 3-0 defeat to Brentford, handing lifeline to Tottenham.
West Ham United's Premier League survival hopes took a major blow on Saturday as they suffered a frustrating 3-0 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. The Hammers were left ruing their luck after hitting the woodwork four times, while Tottenham Hotspur emerged as unexpected beneficiaries.
Woodwork Woe
West Ham dominated large spells of the match, creating numerous clear-cut chances. However, fate was not on their side as they struck the post or crossbar on four separate occasions. The first came through Michail Antonio in the 12th minute, whose powerful header from a corner kick cannoned off the upright. Jarrod Bowen then saw a curling effort from the edge of the box hit the inside of the post and somehow stay out. Declan Rice and Pablo Fornals also rattled the woodwork in the second half, leaving West Ham players and fans alike in disbelief.
Brentford Clinical on the Break
In contrast, Brentford were ruthless with their limited opportunities. Ivan Toney opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, capitalising on a defensive mix-up to slot home. Bryan Mbeumo doubled the lead just before half-time with a composed finish after a swift counter-attack. The Bees sealed the victory in the 67th minute when Yoane Wissa headed home from a free-kick, leaving West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola with no chance.
Survival Fight Intensifies
The defeat leaves West Ham in 18th place, four points adrift of safety with only 10 games remaining. The Hammers have now lost five of their last six league matches, and manager David Moyes is under increasing pressure. "It's a cruel game," Moyes said post-match. "We created enough chances to win two games, but we just couldn't get the rub of the green."
Tottenham Given Lifeline
The result was a welcome boost for Tottenham, who are also embroiled in a relegation battle. Spurs, who lost to Brighton earlier in the day, remain just two points above West Ham but now have a game in hand. West Ham's failure to capitalise on their dominance has handed their London rivals a crucial advantage in the fight for survival.
What's Next?
West Ham face a must-win game against Southampton next weekend, while Tottenham host Leeds United. The pressure is mounting, and the Hammers will need to find their shooting boots quickly if they are to avoid the drop.
