Manchester United Lead Race for £77m Defender Castello Lukeba
Manchester United have entered concrete negotiations to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Castello Lukeba this summer, according to reports from Germany. The 22-year-old French defender, valued at £77 million, is also being monitored by Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, but United are currently at the forefront of the pursuit.
The news comes as the Red Devils look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season. Lukeba, who progressed through Lyon's renowned academy, has made 68 appearances for the French club before moving to Leipzig in 2024.
Defensive Overhaul at Old Trafford
Manchester United conceded 58 goals in the Premier League last season, the highest among top-half teams. Manager Erik ten Hag has identified centre-back as a priority position, particularly with uncertainty surrounding the futures of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelöf.
Lukeba offers a left-footed option, which Ten Hag values for building play from the back. The defender averaged 2.1 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game for Leipzig in the Bundesliga last season, while completing 88% of his passes.
The £77m fee would make Lukeba the second most expensive defender in United's history, behind Harry Maguire's £80m move in 2019.
How Lukeba Fits Ten Hag's System
Ten Hag prefers a high defensive line and aggressive pressing, which suits Lukeba's style. The Frenchman is comfortable in one-on-one situations and has the pace to recover when beaten.
- Lukeba averaged 0.9 dribbles per game, showing his ability to carry the ball out of defence.
- He won 65% of his aerial duels last season, a key stat for United's vulnerability on set pieces.
- His left-footed profile provides balance alongside Lisandro Martínez or Raphael Varane on the right.
Transfer Battle with Chelsea and Tottenham
Chelsea are also in the market for a left-sided centre-back after selling Levi Colwill's loan option. The Blues have held discussions with Lukeba's representatives but have not yet matched United's concrete offer.
Tottenham, meanwhile, are seeking a long-term replacement for Cristian Romero, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. However, Spurs are yet to formalise their interest.
The £77m price tag reflects Lukeba's potential and his long-term contract at Red Bull Arena, which runs until 2028.
Fantasy Premier League Impact
If the transfer goes through, Lukeba would likely start at £5.0m in FPL next season. United kept nine clean sheets last term, but with improved defensive options, their defensive assets could become more attractive.
At £5.0m, Lukeba would be priced similarly to Ben White and John Stones, offering budget-friendly differential potential for FPL managers.
What Next for Manchester United
United are expected to complete the deal before pre-season begins in July. The club is also pursuing a central midfielder and a right-winger, but the Lukeba signing is considered the most advanced.
Should the transfer be finalised, it would signal United's intent to close the gap on Manchester City and Arsenal, while also beating direct rivals Chelsea and Tottenham to a top target.
