Deal details

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have identified Micky Van de Ven as a top target. However, no fee has been reported, and the player recently committed his future to Tottenham until 2031. Liverpool are also monitoring the situation, but no formal approach has been made. Van de Ven is currently club captain under Roberto De Zerbi and is not pushing for a move.

Why Man Utd and Liverpool both need a left-sided centre-back

Manchester United are considering signing a new left centre-back due to concerns over Lisandro Martínez's fitness and contract situation. Martínez has had numerous fitness problems in recent years and has entered the final year of his current deal, making his long-term future uncertain. Ayden Heaven is still very young and needs time to develop, while Harry Maguire has reached the twilight of his career and his contract runs until next summer. Van de Ven, a 6ft 4in left-footed centre-back who can also cover at left-back, fits the profile United are seeking. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and efficient in defensive contributions.

Liverpool also need a new left-sided centre-back as Virgil Van Dijk has entered the final few months of his contract and has reached the twilight of his career. Van Dijk has been an undisputed starter at Anfield since joining from Southampton. Van de Ven is a Premier League-proven player currently at the prime stage of his career, making him a shrewd acquisition for either club should they manage to secure his services. However, Tottenham's stance is clear: Van de Ven has just signed a new long-term contract until 2031 and has been made club captain, so he does not want to leave Spurs just yet.

Talking points

  • Can Manchester United convince Van de Ven to leave Tottenham when he has just signed a new contract until 2031 and been made captain?
  • Would Liverpool be a more attractive destination given Van Dijk's age and the chance to eventually replace him?
  • Is Van de Ven worth breaking the bank for, or should United and Liverpool look elsewhere?
  • Does Tottenham's captaincy offer give them the upper hand in keeping Van de Ven?

What happens next

Manchester United and Liverpool will continue to monitor Van de Ven's situation, but any move is unlikely to happen in January. Tottenham have no intention of selling their captain, and Van de Ven is happy at the club. The two Premier League giants may have to wait until next summer to test Spurs' resolve, but they could face competition from each other and potentially other clubs. For now, Van de Ven remains a Tottenham player and will continue to lead the team under Roberto De Zerbi.
