Gvardiol Extends City Stay Until 2031
Manchester City have secured the long-term future of defender Josko Gvardiol, with the Croatian international agreeing a new contract that runs until the summer of 2031. The deal, confirmed by the club, represents a significant commitment from both player and club as City continue to build for the future.
Gvardiol, 23, joined City from RB Leipzig in 2023 for a reported £77 million fee and has since established himself as a key part of Pep Guardiola's defensive setup. The new contract extends his original deal, which was due to run until 2028, by an additional three years.
A Key Cog in Guardiola's System
Since arriving at the Etihad, Gvardiol has shown remarkable versatility. Although primarily a centre-back, he has frequently been deployed at left-back, particularly during the 2023-24 season when injuries to Nathan Ake and others forced Guardiola to adapt. In that campaign, he made 36 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing three assists, with his advanced runs becoming a notable feature of City's attacking play.
Statistically, Gvardiol averaged 1.2 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in the Premier League in his debut season, with a pass completion rate of 89%, reflecting his composure in possession. His ability to step into midfield from the back aligns perfectly with Guardiola's positional play philosophy, where defenders are often asked to invert or push high.
Long-Term Planning at City
This contract extension comes amid a period of transition for City's defence. With veteran centre-back John Stones entering his 30s and Aymeric Laporte having departed in 2023, Gvardiol's new deal ensures continuity in the heart of the backline. Alongside Ruben Dias and the emerging talent of Manuel Akanji, Gvardiol forms part of a defensive core that could remain together for the best part of a decade.
From a financial perspective, the commitment to 2031 reflects City's confidence in Gvardiol's market value. Similar long-term deals for players like Erling Haaland and Phil Foden have become a hallmark of City's strategy, allowing them to amortise transfer fees and wages while keeping key assets tied down. This approach has proved successful in maintaining squad stability during Guardiola's tenure.
Impact on FPL and Team Selection
For Fantasy Premier League managers, Gvardiol's extended contract solidifies his status as a consistent starter. Priced at £5.5 million in the 2024-25 season opener, his ownership hovered around 12%, making him a differential option. His attacking output from full-back — including a run of three goals in five games early in the 2024-25 campaign — makes him an attractive pick when City keep clean sheets. However, his rotation risk with Ake and Kyle Walker remains, though his versatility might see him feature in the majority of matches.
Looking at upcoming fixtures, City face a relatively favourable run until November, with meetings against struggling sides interspersed with tougher tests. With the new contract signed, Gvardiol's focus will remain on delivering consistent performances to help City retain the Premier League title and pursue further Champions League success.
What This Means for City's Future
By tying down Gvardiol for another seven seasons, Manchester City have removed any immediate speculation over his future. Links to Real Madrid and other European giants had surfaced intermittently since his impressive World Cup performances for Croatia, but this deal effectively ends those rumours.
The next challenge for Gvardiol will be to build on his early success and establish himself as one of the world's elite defenders. With Guardiola's guidance and the stability of a long-term contract, he has every opportunity to do so at City.
