Ilicali fires back at Southampton spygate accusations
Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has broken his silence on the Southampton 'spygate' controversy, dismissing allegations of improper conduct as "nonsense" ahead of a likely Wembley showdown. The Turkish businessman insists his club acted within regulations.
The spygate scandal explained
Southampton accused Hull City of sending an unauthorised individual to observe their training session before a recent Championship fixture. The EFL launched an investigation, but Ilicali maintains the accusation is baseless and designed to disrupt Hull's momentum.
Speaking exclusively to Hull Live, Ilicali stated: "We have done nothing wrong. This is a distraction tactic from Southampton. Our focus remains on the pitch, where we have won four of our last five matches."
Wembley excitement and promotion push
Hull City currently sit second in the Championship, seven points clear of third-placed West Brom with nine games remaining. A trip to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-finals now seems realistic, with the Tigers facing a favourable draw against lower-league opposition.
Ilicali revealed he has already booked Wembley for a potential celebration: "I am a dreamer. I believe in this squad. We have the quality to go up and win at Wembley. The fans deserve it."
What this means for Hull's season
- Promotion odds have shortened to 1/3 following a run of 12 wins in 16 league games.
- Key striker Liam Delap has scored 18 league goals, attracting interest from Brentford and Crystal Palace.
- Manager Liam Rosenior's aggressive 4-2-3-1 pressing system has yielded 1.8 points per game, the best in the division.
What's next for Hull City
Hull travel to Cardiff City this weekend before a crucial home clash against West Brom. With a potential Wembley semi-final on the horizon, Ilicali's backing could be the catalyst for a historic double promotion and cup run. The EFL investigation into spygate is expected to conclude within a fortnight, but Ilicali remains confident of being cleared.
