Everton Boss David Moyes Offers Update on Injury Return for Key Man Ahead of Sunderland Clash
David Moyes confirms Idrissa Gueye 'is back on the grass' but remains doubtful for Premier League trip to Sunderland.
Everton manager David Moyes has provided a fitness update on midfielder Idrissa Gueye, confirming that the Senegal international is back in training but remains a doubt for the Toffees' Premier League trip to Sunderland on Sunday.
Gueye Returns to Training
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Moyes revealed that Gueye has resumed light training after recovering from a calf strain that has kept him sidelined for the past two weeks. "Idrissa is back on the grass, which is great news for us," said Moyes. "He's been working hard with the physios and has made good progress. But Sunday might come too soon for him. We'll assess him over the next 24 hours."
Midfield Options
The 36-year-old's potential absence could see Moyes stick with the midfield partnership of Abdoulaye Doucouré and Orel Mangala, who have started the last two matches. James Garner and youngster midfielder Jenson Metcalfe are also in contention.
Everton have struggled for consistency in midfield this season, and Gueye's experience could be vital against a Sunderland side that has impressed under Regis Le Bris. The Black Cats currently sit in mid-table but have proven tough to beat at the Stadium of Light.
Team News Round-Up
- Idrissa Gueye: Back in training, unlikely for Sunday (calf)
- Jarrad Branthwaite: Back in full training and could feature (hamstring)
- Seamus Coleman: Still out with a thigh injury
- Nathan Patterson: Close to returning from knee injury
What This Means for the Match
Everton will be desperate to build on their recent run of results after climbing away from the relegation zone. Gueye's ability to break up play and dictate tempo in midfield would be a big asset, but Moyes will be cautious not to rush him back for fear of a setback.
Should Gueye miss out, the Toffees will rely on the energy of Doucouré and the passing range of Garner. Sunderland's midfield, led by Dan Neil, will look to exploit any lack of cohesion.
Kick-off at the Stadium of Light is at 3:00 PM BST on Sunday. Everton fans will be hoping for more positive news on the fitness front before the weekend.
