  • Key figure: Xabi Alonso to hold private talks with Kounde
  • Why leaving: Lost prominence under Hansi Flick, largely benched
  • Context: Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at the weekend
  • Stage: Interest and planned talks; no formal bid reported

Deal details

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have identified Jules Kounde as a potential addition to revamp their backline. The 27-year-old Frenchman is valued at £46 million on Transfermarkt. No fee has been agreed and no formal bid has been reported; this is interest at the discussion stage.

Kounde is likely to depart Barcelona having lost prominence in Hansi Flick's plans. Chelsea's interest is not new — they had been keen on him since his time at Sevilla, before he ultimately joined Barcelona.

Xabi Alonso is expected to privately discuss his and Chelsea's interest in Kounde directly with the player. The Frenchman might seek assurances over his role at Chelsea, as his primary reason for leaving Barcelona would be to regain his feet. It will be interesting to see what Alonso has in mind for him.

Why Kounde has fallen out of favour at Barcelona

In recent weeks, Flick's inclination towards the likes of Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi at centre back, and Joao Cancelo and Xavi Espart, has seen Kounde remain largely on the bench. That lack of regular starts has opened the door to a Premier League switch.

Why Kounde would be a brilliant signing for Chelsea

Jules Kounde is an excellent defender and in the last couple of seasons at Barcelona he has upped his quality as a right back despite naturally being a centre back. His quality will significantly help improve Chelsea.

The 27-year-old is very composed on the ball and helps distribute effectively from the back. Without the ball, he is quick, can stay on top of his man, makes accurate tackles and can excel in physical duels in spite of his short height.

His experience at Sevilla and now with Barcelona means he has extensive knowhow of the elite level of the game, while his age makes him a very good medium-term option for Chelsea in the prime phase of his career.

What happens next

Chelsea's immediate focus is on building on their 2-0 win over Manchester United as they push for a top-five finish and aim to challenge Arsenal and Manchester City for the title. Off the pitch, the next decisive step is the private conversation between Xabi Alonso and Kounde, which could clarify whether the Frenchman sees a move to Stamford Bridge as the right platform to revive his career.

Talking points

  • Is Kounde a right back or a centre back for Chelsea? He has excelled as a right back at Barcelona but is naturally a centre back, so Alonso must decide where he fits best.
  • At £46m, is Kounde good value for a 27-year-old who has been largely benched by Hansi Flick? His experience suggests yes, but his lack of recent starts is a risk.
  • Could Kounde's arrival block a pathway for Chelsea's existing defenders? The Blues are looking to revamp their backline, which could mean departures.
  • Will assurances over his role be enough to convince Kounde to leave Barcelona? He wants to regain his feet, so regular starts will be key.
