Brighton smash transfer record to land Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham

Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of Croatia international defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record fee of £46 million. The 20-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with the Seagulls, which includes an option for an additional year.

Historic deal for the south-coast club

The £46m outlay surpasses Brighton's previous record — the £30m spent on goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen in 2023. Vuskovic becomes the most expensive acquisition in the club's history, underlining their ambition under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

The Croatian centre-back only joined Tottenham in January 2024 from Hadjuk Split for an initial £12m. Despite making only 18 appearances for Spurs, his potential and physicality caught Brighton's attention. The Seagulls have a track record of developing young defenders, such as Lewis Dunk and Ben White, and will hope Vuskovic follows suit.

Tactical fit and defensive rebuild at Brighton

Brighton's defence has been inconsistent this season, conceding 34 goals in 24 Premier League matches. De Zerbi favours a high-pressing, attacking system that leaves defenders exposed. Vuskovic, at 6ft 4in, adds aerial dominance and composure in possession — two attributes crucial to the Italian's style.

The signing also signals a potential departure for one of Brighton's current centre-backs. Jan Paul van Hecke and Adam Webster have been regulars, but the club may need to sell to balance the books after this record spend. Vuskovic could be an immediate starter alongside Dunk.

Transfer context and market implications

The £46m fee places Vuskovic among the most expensive defenders in Premier League history at his age. Only Josko Gvardiol (Leipzig to Manchester City, £77m) and Wesley Fofana (Leicester to Chelsea, £70m) commanded higher sums for a central defender under 21.

For Tottenham, selling a player they signed just 14 months ago for a £34m profit is shrewd business. However, it leaves manager Ange Postecoglou with only Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Radu Dragusin as senior centre-backs. Spurs may now enter the market for a replacement.

Fantasy Premier League impact

Vuskovic is priced at £5.0m in FPL — affordable for a defender at a top-half club. Brighton's upcoming fixtures (vs. Wolves, Everton, Nottingham Forest) offer clean-sheet potential. However, De Zerbi's system makes clean sheets unpredictable; only six this season. FPL managers should monitor his minutes before transferring in.

What's next for both clubs

Brighton will integrate Vuskovic into the squad ahead of their weekend trip to Wolverhampton. The club will hope he can help secure European football for a second consecutive season. Tottenham, meanwhile, have funds to reinvest and are reportedly targeting a young centre-back from Serie A, likely Genoa's Radu Dragusin's former teammate.
