Newcastle United vs Sunderland: Kick-off Time, Lineups & Preview

Newcastle United vs Sunderland — Premier League Match Preview

Recent Form: Newcastle enter the Tyne-Wear derby with genuine momentum, having taken seven points from their last three league fixtures. Their high-pressing structure under Eddie Howe has produced a strong home record, with St James' Park once again a fortress. Sunderland, by contrast, arrive with a mixed run — one win in four — though their away resilience has impressed, conceding just twice on the road in that stretch. The Black Cats sit mid-table but carry the psychological edge of derby unpredictability.

Tactical Battle — Midfield Control: This is where the match will be decided. Newcastle's double pivot of Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali thrives on vertical progression and aggressive counter-pressing. Sunderland's midfield trio will look to congest central lanes, deny Guimarães time on the half-turn, and force play wide. If the visitors can win the second-ball battle and slow Newcastle's transitions, they'll frustrate the home crowd. If Newcastle bypass the first line quickly, Sunderland's back four will be exposed.

Tactical Battle — Wingers: Newcastle's wide threat is paramount. Anthony Gordon's direct running against Sunderland's right-back is a key matchup — expect the visitors to double up and force him inside. On the opposite flank, Sunderland's pacey wide men will target Newcastle's advanced full-backs, seeking 2v1 overloads in transition. The team that wins the wide duel controls the game's rhythm.

Predicted Outcome: Derby intensity will compress space early, but Newcastle's superior individual quality and home advantage should tell. Expect a tight first half before the Magpies' pressing creates a breakthrough. Prediction: Newcastle United 2–1 Sunderland.
