Tottenham Hotspur Preparing Improved £55m Bid for Jan Paul van Hecke

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing to launch an improved third proposal to sign Brighton and Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Football Insider claims the player is ‘determined’ to join Spurs as the north London club steps up its pursuit.

Van Hecke's Rise at Brighton

The 24-year-old Dutch centre-back joined Brighton from NAC Breda in 2020 and spent loan spells at Heerenveen and Blackburn Rovers before breaking into the first team. Last season he made 28 Premier League appearances, establishing himself as a reliable ball-playing defender under Roberto De Zerbi.

Van Hecke’s composure on the ball and ability to carry the ball forward fit the modern centre-back profile. He averaged 82.4 passes per 90 minutes with an 89% completion rate in 2023/24, ranking among the top defenders for progressive passes. His defensive stats are solid: 1.8 tackles and 4.2 clearances per game, though aerial duels (57% won) could improve.

Tottenham's Defensive Overhaul

Spurs conceded 61 goals last season, their worst defensive record in a Premier League campaign. Manager Ange Postecoglou’s aggressive high line requires centre-backs who can defend in space and start attacks. Van Hecke’s style aligns with that demand.

Tottenham have already signed young centre-back Ashley Phillips from Blackburn and retain Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, but depth is thin. With Japhet Tanganga likely leaving and Eric Dier departed, a new central defender is a priority.

Transfer Fee Context

Brighton are known for demanding high fees for their stars. The reported £55m would make Van Hecke one of the most expensive Dutch defenders in history, comparable to Virgil van Dijk’s £75m move to Liverpool in 2018 (adjusted for inflation). For context, Tottenham paid £40m for Romero in 2021 and £50m for Richarlison. Brighton’s record sale is Moisés Caicedo to Chelsea for £115m.

The Seagulls have already lost key defenders this summer: Levi Colwill returned to Chelsea and (if van Hecke leaves) they retain Lewis Dunk, Adam Webster, and Igor Julio. Brighton also signed Valentin Barco as a left-back option.

Fantasy Premier League Impact

Van Hecke is priced at £4.5m in FPL — a budget enabler with potential for clean sheets. At Brighton, he was a rotation risk, but at Spurs he could be a regular starter. Tottenham’s upcoming fixtures include matches against newly promoted sides and teams that struggled to score last season, making him a possible differential if he arrives early.

Owners of Spurs defenders like Destiny Udogie or Pedro Porro may benefit from Van Hecke’s presence tightening the backline, increasing clean sheet potential.

What's Next for Spurs and Brighton

Tottenham must decide whether to increase their offer or move to alternatives. Brighton have no financial pressure to sell and may hold out for a higher fee, especially if other suitors emerge. Van Hecke’s determination to leave could force a deal, but Brighton rejected a previous bid of £40m. The transfer window runs until 30 August, so time remains for negotiations. If the move fails, Spurs may target other centre-backs such as Jean-Clair Todibo or Marc Guehi.
