Newcastle United Eye Dusan Vlahovic as Free Agent Target
Newcastle United are reportedly considering a free transfer move for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic. The Serbian international’s contract expires in the summer, making him one of Europe’s most sought-after free agents.
According to Sports Boom, Eddie Howe’s side are assessing whether to accelerate their interest in the 24-year-old. Vlahovic joined Juventus from Fiorentina in January 2022 for €81.6m but has struggled to consistently replicate his prolific Serie A form in Turin.
Vlahovic’s Form and Tactical Fit
Vlahovic has scored 12 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions this season, a respectable return but below his peak levels. A left-footed forward, he excels at running in behind defences and finishing with power. At Newcastle, he could provide a focal point for a side that has relied on Alexander Isak’s movement and Callum Wilson’s poaching instincts.
Howe’s system often utilises a lone striker who can hold up play and link with fast wingers like Anthony Gordon and Miguel Almiron. Vlahovic’s physicality and aerial ability would add a different dimension, particularly against deep-sitting defences. However, his pressing numbers have been questioned, which might not align perfectly with Newcastle’s high-energy style.
Newcastle have won four of their last six Premier League matches, climbing to seventh in the table. A clinical finisher could boost their chances of securing European football. Last season, they finished fourth and reached the Champions League, but their goal tally has dipped this term, scoring 52 goals in 34 league games, 14 fewer than at this stage last year.
Transfer Market Context
Signing Vlahovic on a free would represent shrewd business for Newcastle, given their need to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. The club spent heavily in earlier windows—£60m on Sandro Tonali, £45m on Alexander Isak—and a free transfer allows them to allocate funds toward wages and signing-on fees. Vlahovic’s current salary at Juventus is reportedly around €12m per season, and a similar package in the Premier League would be high but manageable for the Magpies.
Comparable free transfers in recent seasons include Kylian Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid and Paulo Dybala’s switch to Roma. A free signing of Vlahovic’s calibre would be Newcastle’s most high-profile since their Saudi-backed takeover in 2021.
Competition for Vlahovic is expected to be fierce. Arsenal, Chelsea, and several Italian clubs have also been linked, meaning Newcastle must act decisively if they want to secure his signature.
Fantasy Premier League Implications
Vlahovic is currently owned by just 2.1% of FPL managers. If he joins Newcastle, that percentage could skyrocket given their favourable fixture run-in. Newcastle face Brighton, Burnley, and Sheffield United in their final four matches, all of whom are in the bottom half for expected goals conceded (xGC). At a likely price of ₩8.0-₩9.0m, Vlahovic could become a differential for the final gameweeks.
However, FPL managers should note that he would need time to integrate with his new teammates, and his minutes might be managed initially. The fixture against Burnley (H) in Gameweek 36 is particularly promising.
What’s Next for Newcastle and Vlahovic
Newcastle’s board must decide whether to trigger formal negotiations now or wait until the summer. With Juventus keen to avoid losing him for nothing, a pre-contract agreement could be signed from January. Howe’s preference for younger, athletic players suggests Vlahovic fits the profile, but the club’s transfer strategy has often prioritised value over marquee names. The next few weeks will reveal whether Newcastle accelerate their pursuit or pivot to alternative targets.
