Hull City Secure Wembley Return with Dominant Display

Hull City booked their place in the Championship Play-Off final with a composed 2-0 victory over Millwall at The Den on Tuesday evening. The Tigers, who led 1-0 from the first leg, advanced 3-1 on aggregate thanks to goals from Ozan Tufan and Liam Delap.

First-Half Pressure Turned Into Goals

Hull dominated the opening 45 minutes, pressing high and forcing Millwall into errors. Ozan Tufan broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, latching onto a deflected cross to slot home. Liam Delap doubled the lead just before half-time, capitalising on a poor clearance from Millwall goalkeeper Matija Sarkic.

Millwall struggled to create clear chances, failing to register a shot on target in the first half. The Lions’ direct approach was neutralised by Hull’s organised defence, led by Jacob Greaves, who won six aerial duels and made four clearances.

Second Half: Millwall's Frustration Grows

The hosts pushed forward after the break but lacked incision. Zian Flemming forced a save from Hull goalkeeper Ryan Allsop, but that was as close as they came. Hull’s counter-attacking threat kept Millwall honest, with Delap and Adama Traore causing problems on the break.

  • Possession: Millwall 48% - 52% Hull
  • Shots on target: Millwall 1 - 4 Hull
  • Expected Goals (xG): Millwall 0.8 - 1.6 Hull

Hull’s defensive discipline was key. They conceded only one shot on target across both legs, showcasing the improvements made under Liam Rosenior. The Tigers have now kept five clean sheets in their last eight matches.

Play-Off Final Awaits – Tactical Battle Ahead

Hull will face either Southampton or West Brom in the final at Wembley on May 26. Their counter-pressing style and set-piece efficiency will be crucial. Liam Rosenior has instilled a clear identity: aggressive pressing, quick transitions, and reliance on young talents like Delap (21) and Tufan (28).

Millwall, meanwhile, will reflect on a season of inconsistency. Gary Rowett’s side finished eighth, four points off the play-offs, but their inability to perform in big moments cost them. The club must now regroup for another promotion push next season.

Hull’s achievement is remarkable given their 14th-placed finish last season. They have won seven of their last ten away games, a record that bodes well for the Wembley showpiece.
