Man United eye midfield reinforcements

Manchester United are strongly considering two midfield options as they continue their search for a third midfield signing this summer, according to reports. Roma's Manu Kone and Brighton's Carlos Baleba are the players under consideration.

The Red Devils have already made two acquisitions in the engine room but are keen to add further depth before the transfer window closes. Erik ten Hag's side are looking to bolster their options in central areas after a mixed start to the season.

Who are the targets?

Manu Kone, the 22-year-old French midfielder currently at Roma, has impressed in Serie A since his move from Borussia Monchengladbach. Known for his box-to-box energy and ball-carrying ability, Kone offers a dynamic presence in the middle of the park.

Carlos Baleba, the 20-year-old Cameroon international at Brighton, has emerged as one of the most promising young midfielders in the Premier League. Since joining from Lille in 2023, Baleba has developed into a powerful, all-action midfielder capable of breaking up play and driving forward.

Both players are understood to be high on United's shortlist as the club looks to add a third midfield signing to complement their existing options. The club have already brought in Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen in recent windows but are seeking further energy and physicality.

Tactical context

Erik ten Hag's system relies on midfielders who can press aggressively, cover ground quickly, and provide both defensive solidity and attacking thrust. Kone and Baleba both fit this mould.

Kone averages 2.1 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per 90 minutes in Serie A this season, while Baleba posts similar numbers in the Premier League with 2.3 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per 90. Both players are also comfortable in possession, with pass completion rates above 85%.

United's midfield has at times lacked the physical presence to compete with the league's top sides. Adding either Kone or Baleba would give Ten Hag a more robust option to partner with the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

Transfer market context

Roma signed Kone for a fee in the region of Β£25m last summer and are likely to demand a significant profit if they are to sell. Brighton, meanwhile, are known for demanding high fees for their prized assets, with Baleba likely to cost in excess of Β£40m.

United have already spent heavily this summer on the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana, but the club are expected to continue backing Ten Hag in the market. A third midfield signing would take the club's total spending past Β£150m for the window.

Comparable deals include Chelsea's Β£70m move for Moises Caicedo and Arsenal's Β£65m signing of Declan Rice, both of whom played similar roles. United, however, are likely to target a more cost-effective option, with Kone and Baleba representing different price brackets.

Fantasy Premier League impact

For FPL managers, a move for either player could have implications. Kone is currently owned by just 0.2% of managers and is priced at Β£5.0m in the game, while Baleba is owned by 0.8% at Β£5.5m.

A move to United would likely boost both players' appeal, though neither is expected to be a guaranteed starter immediately. United's favourable fixtures after the international break could make them differential options if they secure regular minutes.

However, existing United midfielders like Bruno Fernandes (Β£8.4m) and Mason Mount (Β£7.0m) remain the primary FPL targets from the club's engine room.
