Man United target Lewis Hall in £55m deal: Newcastle left-back scouted
Manchester United are pushing forward with a summer move for Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall. The club's technical director Jason Wilcox is driving negotiations for a deal valued at £55 million.
Background: Hall's rise at Newcastle
Hall joined Newcastle from Chelsea in 2023 for an initial £28 million, plus add-ons. This season, the 19-year-old has made 28 Premier League appearances, registering 2 goals and 5 assists. His underlying numbers are impressive: he ranks in the top 15% of full-backs for progressive passes and carries per 90 minutes.
Hall’s versatility is a major asset. He can play as a traditional left-back, a wing-back, or even as an inverted full-back – a role that suits Ruben Amorim’s tactical preferences. Amorim, appointed as Manchester United manager in November 2024, has implemented a fluid 3-4-2-1 system at Old Trafford. In this setup, full-backs are required to step into midfield during possession, offering passing lanes and numerical overloads. Hall’s technical composure and passing range make him an ideal fit for that duty.
Impact at Manchester United
United’s left-back position has been a problem area since Luke Shaw’s persistent injuries. Shaw has managed only 12 league starts this season, while Tyrell Malacia has struggled for form. Hall would immediately compete for the starting spot, offering greater availability and a more progressive style.
From a tactical standpoint, Hall would allow United to push their midfield higher. His ability to receive the ball under pressure and clip accurate crosses – he averages 1.8 key passes per game – would benefit Rasmus Højlund and the wide forwards. Defensively, his 1.6 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game show he is not a liability.
For Fantasy Premier League managers, Hall is currently owned by 12.4% of players and priced at £5.0m. United’s fixture schedule from Gameweek 34 includes favourable matches against Everton, Wolves, and Southampton. If he joins and becomes first-choice, he would be a budget enabler in defence.
Transfer context
- £55m would make Hall the second-most expensive left-back ever, after Ben Chilwell's £50m move to Chelsea in 2020 (adjusted for inflation).
- Newcastle value Hall highly but may need to sell due to Profit and Sustainability Rules. They must raise funds by June 30 to avoid penalties.
- United have already spent £100m this summer on Sandro Tonali and a striker. This deal would require player sales – Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelöf are likely departures.
Comparatively, Hall’s fee would be higher than the £43m Manchester City paid for Josko Gvardiol (a centre-back) and reflects the premium for homegrown, Premier League-proven talent.
What next?
Negotiations are expected to intensify in the coming weeks. United will likely test Newcastle’s resolve with an initial bid of £40m plus add-ons. Newcastle, keen to avoid a fire sale, will hold out for £55m. If Hall joins, he will be United’s third summer signing and could be registered in time for pre-season friendlies. The move reinforces United’s strategy of targeting young, adaptable players under Amorim’s project.
