Hull City told to increase bid for Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin by £6m

Hull City have been told to significantly increase their bid for Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin if they hope to secure his signature this January, according to a BBC journalist. The Championship side's initial offer falls well short of Rangers' valuation.

Rangers' valuation and Hull's offer

Raskin, 23, joined Rangers from Standard Liège in January 2023 for a reported fee in the region of £1.8m. The Belgian has made 43 appearances for the Scottish giants, scoring once and providing three assists. His contract at Ibrox runs until the summer of 2027, giving Rangers strong negotiating leverage.

Hull City, currently 21st in the Championship and battling relegation, are in urgent need of midfield reinforcement. New manager Rubén Sellés is looking to bolster his squad after taking over from Tim Walter in November. However, their initial proposal is understood to be around £4m, while Rangers are holding out for closer to £10m — a gap of around £6m.

Impact on Hull City's season

Hull have won just one of their last five Championship matches and sit four points above the relegation zone. The addition of a dynamic midfielder like Raskin could provide much-needed impetus. Raskin is comfortable in a deep-lying playmaker role or as a box-to-box midfielder, offering versatility that would suit Sellés' preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

However, the £10m asking price represents a significant outlay for a club that spent just over £5m on permanent signings last summer. Hull's recruitment strategy under owner Acun Ilıcalı has been ambitious but must balance Financial Fair Play constraints.

  • Raskin ranks in the top 10% of Scottish Premiership midfielders for progressive passes per 90 (8.2) and dribbles completed (1.5).
  • He has started 14 of Rangers' 18 league matches this season, registering one assist.
  • Hull have the second-lowest pass completion rate in the Championship (71.2%), highlighting the need for technical quality in midfield.

What happens next?

With the transfer window closing on 3 February, negotiations are likely to intensify in the coming days. Hull may return with an improved offer, potentially including performance-related add-ons to bridge the gap. Alternatively, Rangers could hold firm, knowing they have no need to sell a player under contract until 2027. Other Championship clubs, including Sunderland and Coventry, have also been linked with Raskin in recent windows.

For Hull, failing to strengthen now could prove costly in their survival fight. For Raskin, a move to English football's second tier represents a chance to showcase his talent in a highly competitive league, with potential for a Premier League step-up if he impresses.
