Everton eye move for Sporting CP right-back Georgios Vagiannidis
Everton are reportedly showing an interest in signing Sporting CP defender Georgios Vagiannidis, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola. The 24-year-old Greek right-back has caught the attention of the Toffees' recruitment team following a string of strong performances in Portugal's Primeira Liga.
The report suggests Sporting CP are open to a sale, with the Portuguese giants prepared to cash in on the player. Vagiannidis is a product of Sporting's academy and has developed into a reliable option on the right flank.
Who is Georgios Vagiannidis?
Vagiannidis, 24, joined Sporting CP's youth system from Greek side Panathinaikos in 2021. He made his first-team breakthrough during the 2022-23 campaign, contributing two assists in 18 league appearances. This season, he has played 14 matches across all competitions, providing one assist and helping Sporting maintain a strong defensive record.
The Greek defender is known for his overlapping runs, crossing ability, and versatility — he can operate as a right-back or a right-sided midfielder. His current contract at the Estadio José Alvalade runs until 2026, meaning any deal would likely command a significant fee.
Everton's right-back situation
Everton have relied heavily on Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson as their primary right-backs this season. Coleman, 35, remains a leader but has struggled with injuries, while Patterson's development has been hampered by fitness issues. The club also has Ben Godfrey, but he is primarily a centre-back or left-back.
Adding a specialist right-back like Vagiannidis would provide depth and competition. His age aligns with Everton's strategy of investing in younger players with resale value, as seen with recent acquisitions like Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite.
In terms of tactical fit, manager Sean Dyche favours a compact 4-4-1-1 system with full-backs who can support attacks while maintaining defensive solidity. Vagiannidis's work rate and crossing could suit this approach, particularly for targeting set pieces and crosses into the box.
Transfer market context
Everton's financial constraints are well documented, with the club operating under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) scrutiny. Any signing would likely need to be funded by player sales or structured payment plans. The reported £9 million fee for Vagiannidis is relatively modest by Premier League standards and could represent value for money.
Comparable right-back signings in recent windows include Wolves' Nelson Semedo (€15m), Nottingham Forest's Neco Williams (£17m), and Aston Villa's Matty Cash (£16m). Vagiannidis at £9m would be at the lower end of that scale, making him a low-risk investment.
What next?
Everton are expected to prioritise a right-back in the upcoming transfer windows, and Vagiannidis appears to be on their radar. Sporting CP are known for driving hard bargains, but given their willingness to sell, a deal could materialise if the Toffees submit a formal offer.
For FPL managers, any Everton defensive signing would be worth monitoring given the team's improved defensive record under Dyche. Everton have kept nine clean sheets in the Premier League this season, and a new right-back could solidify that backline further.
