Chelsea identify Lacroix as key defensive target
Chelsea have registered their interest in Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix, according to The Athletic. The Blues are understood to be seeking defensive reinforcements under head coach Enzo Maresca, with the Frenchman emerging as a prime candidate.
Lacroix, 24, has been a consistent performer for Palace since arriving from Wolfsburg in 2020. The Eagles paid around £43m for his services, and Chelsea may need to match that figure to secure his signature this summer.
Tactical fit under Maresca
Maresca's system demands ball-playing centre-backs who can step into midfield and progress play. Lacroix fits that profile, averaging over 60 passes per game with an 89% completion rate in the Premier League last season. His ability to carry the ball forward from deep would complement Chelsea's possession-based approach.
At 6ft 2in, Lacroix also offers aerial dominance, winning 68% of his headed duels in 2024-25. This would address Chelsea's vulnerability on set pieces, where they conceded 12 goals last season.
Transfer market context
The £43m valuation places Lacroix among the most expensive centre-backs in Chelsea's recent history. For comparison, Wesley Fofana cost £70m from Leicester in 2022, while Benoît Badiashile arrived for £35m from Monaco in 2023. A deal for Lacroix would represent a mid-range investment for a proven Premier League defender.
Chelsea's need for defensive depth is acute. With Thiago Silva departing at the end of his contract and Axel Disasi struggling for form, only Levi Colwill and Badiashile are guaranteed first-team minutes. Lacroix would provide competition and cover across a long season.
Fantasy Premier League impact
Lacroix was priced at £4.5m in FPL last season, making him a budget-friendly option for managers seeking clean sheets. Palace kept 10 clean sheets in 2024-25, and Lacroix started 34 matches. A move to Chelsea, with their improved defensive record under Maresca, could boost his appeal further, though rotation risk would increase.
With Chelsea's favourable early fixtures against newly-promoted sides, Lacroix could be a differential pick if he secures a starting spot.
What it means for Palace
Palace would lose a key asset if Lacroix departs. The club's defensive structure, built around his composure and Joachim Andersen's aggression, would need reshaping. The £43m fee, however, would fund reinvestment across the squad under Oliver Glasner.
What's next
Chelsea are expected to open formal negotiations once the summer window begins. Palace value Lacroix highly and may resist a sale unless the fee meets their valuation. With interest from other Premier League clubs, this deal could accelerate quickly if Chelsea match the asking price.
