Brighton secure Portuguese defender Costinha from Olympiacos

Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of Portuguese defender Costinha from Greek side Olympiacos on a five-year contract, the club announced on Friday.

The 24-year-old centre-back becomes the Seagulls' first defensive addition of the summer transfer window as manager Roberto De Zerbi continues to reshape his squad following last season's sixth-place finish in the Premier League.

What Costinha brings to Brighton's defence

Costinha, who came through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon before moving to Olympiacos in 2022, is known for his physicality, aerial dominance and composure in possession. At 6ft 3in, he provides an imposing presence in both boxes, attributes that align with the high defensive line and build-from-the-back style De Zerbi demands.

During his two seasons in Greece, Costinha made 68 appearances across all competitions, helping Olympiacos win back-to-back Super League titles in 2023 and 2024. He also contributed four goals from set pieces, highlighting his threat from corners and free kicks.

Impact on Brighton's squad and tactical setup

Brighton already boast considerable depth at centre-back, with Lewis Dunk, Adam Webster, Jan Paul van Hecke and Igor Julio on the books. Costinha's arrival could signal a departure, with Joel Veltman or possibly Webster linked with moves away.

De Zerbi's system relies heavily on centre-backs splitting wide to allow full-backs to push high. Costinha's passing range — he completed 88% of passes last season in the Greek league — suggests he can adapt quickly to the Italian's demands. His ability to play on the left of a back three or as a left-sided centre-back in a four-man defence adds tactical flexibility.

Transfer context and market value

While the exact transfer fee has not been disclosed, British media estimate the deal to be worth around £12 million, a sum that reflects Costinha's status as an established Europa League performer. For context, Brighton paid a similar fee for Jan Paul van Hecke in 2022, who has since developed into a reliable squad player.

The acquisition fits Brighton's recruitment model of targeting relatively young, undervalued players with resale potential. Costinha, at 24, still has room for growth and could see his market value double if he adapts to the Premier League.

Fantasy Premier League outlook

For FPL managers, Costinha is likely to be priced around £4.5 million, making him a budget-friendly fifth defender option. Brighton's opening fixtures include home matches against Everton and West Ham, offering clean sheet potential. However, he may initially be rotated given the depth in defence, so early-season caution is advised.

What's next for Brighton and Costinha

Costinha will link up with his new teammates for pre-season training next week, with Brighton's first Premier League fixture scheduled for mid-August. The club face a busy summer of friendlies, giving the Portuguese defender valuable minutes to integrate into De Zerbi's system.

Brighton's transfer business is not expected to stop here. The club remain in the market for a left-back and an attacking midfielder to replace the departed Alexis Mac Allister. Costinha's signing, however, addresses a key area of need and provides De Zerbi with another quality option in defence.
