Arsenal plan audacious move for Morgan Rogers
Arsenal are preparing an ambitious bid to sign Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers this summer, according to reports. The north London club are expected to make a formal offer for the 21-year-old attacker, who has been valued at £100 million.
Mikel Arteta's side face strong competition from Liverpool and Manchester United, both of whom have also registered interest in the former Middlesbrough man.
Rising star at Villa Park
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024 for an initial fee of £8 million, with add-ons potentially rising to £15 million. Since then, he has established himself as a key figure in Unai Emery's squad, contributing 7 goals and 6 assists in 28 Premier League appearances this season.
His performances have drawn comparisons to some of the league's most dynamic forwards, with his ability to operate across the front line making him a versatile asset. At 6ft 2in, he combines physical presence with technical skill, and his dribbling success rate (62.3 per cent) ranks among the top 10 per cent of attackers in Europe's top five leagues.
How Rogers fits at Arsenal
Arsenal's interest in Rogers is unsurprising given their ongoing search for a left-sided forward. Gabriel Martinelli has struggled for consistency this term, managing just 4 league goals, while Leandro Trossard, at 30, is not a long-term solution.
Rogers' preferred role cutting in from the left would provide direct competition for Martinelli. He also offers an aerial threat that the Gunners currently lack in wide areas — he has won 3.1 aerial duels per 90 minutes, a figure that would rank him first among Arsenal's wingers.
From a tactical standpoint, Arteta's system demands high pressing and positional interchange. Rogers' energy and willingness to track back align well with those requirements. His 2.3 tackles per game in the final third show he can contribute defensively, a trait Arteta values highly in his attacking players.
Transfer market context
The £100 million valuation would make Rogers one of the most expensive English players in history. For context, Jack Grealish's £100 million move to Manchester City in 2021 remains the benchmark for domestic attackers, while Declan Rice cost Arsenal £105 million last summer.
Aston Villa are under no pressure to sell. Rogers signed a contract until 2029 upon his arrival, and Emery has built his attacking patterns around the youngster. However, Villa's financial position could shift if they fail to qualify for the Champions League — they currently sit fifth, three points clear of sixth-placed Newcastle with nine games remaining.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have the financial firepower to execute such a deal. The club's summer budget is expected to exceed £200 million, boosted by potential sales of Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe and Kieran Tierney.
FPL implications
From a Fantasy Premier League perspective, Rogers' ownership stands at 14.2 per cent. He is currently priced at £6.5 million, making him a mid-range option. Should he move to Arsenal, his price would likely increase, but so would his points potential. Arsenal's favourable run-in — they face Everton, West Ham and Bournemouth in their final four matches — could make him a differential if the transfer occurs in the summer, though FPL managers would only benefit next season.
What happens next
Arsenal are expected to formalise their interest when the transfer window opens in June. Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle, with Rogers believed to be keen on a move to a Champions League club. However, Aston Villa's resolve will be tested. The Villans value Rogers as untouchable unless an offer exceeds £100 million.
Liverpool and Manchester United remain in the race. The Reds view Rogers as a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah, whose contract expires in 2025, while United see him as an upgrade on Antony. Arsenal's ability to offer Champions League football — they are currently second in the league — could prove decisive.
