AC Milan want Amad Diallo but Manchester United hold the cards

Italian giants AC Milan have expressed interest in signing Manchester United winger Amad Diallo, according to reports. The Serie A side see the 22-year-old as a potential addition to their attacking ranks, but United are under no pressure to sell.

Diallo's journey at Manchester United

Diallo joined United from Atalanta in January 2021 for an initial £19 million, rising to £37 million with add-ons. He made his debut later that season but found first-team opportunities limited. After loan spells at Rangers, Sunderland and Stoke City, he returned to Old Trafford this season and has impressed in cup competitions.

The Ivorian winger offers pace, dribbling and versatility across the front line. He has registered three assists in Europa League group stage appearances this term, creating chances at a rate of 2.1 per 90 minutes. His defensive work rate has also improved, making him a more complete option for rotation.

Why United hold the leverage

United are under no financial pressure to sell Diallo, as he is under contract until June 2025 with a club option for a further year. Any bid would need to reflect his potential and the investment already made. AC Milan's interest is understood to be exploratory at this stage, with no formal offer tabled.

Manager Ruben Amorim has been cautious with Diallo's minutes, using him primarily in the Europa League and domestic cups. However, injuries to key attackers have opened the door for more regular involvement. United value Diallo's long-term upside and are not actively seeking to move him on.

From Milan's perspective, they are looking for cost-effective reinforcements after a mixed season. They currently sit fourth in Serie A, 12 points behind leaders Inter, and need attacking depth for their Champions League push. Diallo would fit their model of developing young talent, but United's valuation may prove prohibitive.

Impact on Fantasy Premier League

  • Diallo is currently priced at £5.0 million in FPL, owned by only 1.2% of managers.
  • His minutes are unpredictable, making him a risky differential. However, if a transfer to Milan materialises, he could become a regular starter in Serie A.
  • Upcoming fixtures for United: Leeds (H), Wolves (A), Chelsea (A) – not favourable for rotation gambles.

Historical precedent: Similar cases at United

United have previously been in strong negotiating positions for young attackers. In 2022, they rebuffed late interest from Barcelona for Antony, eventually selling two years later for a reduced fee. Similarly, they held out for a higher price for James Garner before selling to Everton. The club tends to demand full value for academy or recent signings, suggesting Diallo will not be sold on the cheap.

One comparable case is Facundo Pellistri, who was also coveted by La Liga clubs but remained at United until his contract expired. Diallo's situation differs in that he has shown more consistent output during loans, making him a more attractive asset.

What next for Diallo and United?

January is a difficult window to negotiate deals, especially for players under contract with options. Milan may test United's resolve with an opening bid, but the expectation is that Diallo will remain at Old Trafford until at least the summer. United are unlikely to sanction a sale without a guaranteed replacement lined up.

For Diallo, regular football is his priority. If Amorim cannot guarantee that, a summer exit becomes more likely with interested clubs across Europe. For now, United hold the stronger hand and can dictate the terms of any potential departure.
